The Easiest Outfit You’ll Wear All Summer
Let's talk about playsuits.
They're one of those pieces that divide opinion. Some women live in them every summer, while others take one look and immediately think, "Absolutely not."
If you're in the second camp, I have a theory.
It's not that you don't suit playsuits.
It's that you haven't found the right playsuit.
Because unlike a classic dress, where the fit can be a little more forgiving, playsuits are all about proportions. Get the shape wrong and they can feel uncomfortable, unflattering, or like they're fighting against your body.
Get the shape right, though, and they're one of the easiest things you'll own.
One piece.
Minimal effort.
A complete outfit.
No trying to work out which top goes with which trousers. No wardrobe meltdown before a barbecue, holiday dinner, or weekend brunch.
Just throw it on and go.
The problem is that most retailers lump every style under the same category. A tailored belted playsuit, a floaty wrap style, and a structured utility playsuit all get labelled "playsuits" despite working for completely different body shapes.
Which is why so many women try one, hate it, and decide playsuits simply aren't for them.
Before you banish them forever, it's worth understanding which styles are designed to work with your shape rather than against it.
A Quick Body Shape Refresher
Pear Shape
Your hips are wider than your shoulders.
The goal is often to create balance by drawing attention upwards and adding interest through the shoulders, neckline, or sleeves.
Inverted Triangle
Your shoulders are wider than your hips.
Styles that add volume or detail on the lower half can help create balance.
Hourglass
Your shoulders and hips are balanced, with a defined waist.
The best styles tend to highlight your waist rather than hide it.
Rectangle
Your shoulders and hips are similar in width, with little waist definition.
Look for styles that create shape through belts, gathers, wraps, or tailoring.
Apple
You carry more fullness through your middle.
The most flattering playsuits tend to skim rather than cling, while drawing attention to your neckline, shoulders, or legs.
Now we've got that out of the way, let's get into the styles themselves.
I've rounded up some of my favourite playsuits and, more importantly, who they're actually best suited to. Because shopping gets a lot easier when you stop asking, "Do I like it?" and start asking, "Was this designed for my shape?"
